SPOCO 10

Wednesday 31st August 2005 - Course E91/10

Brian Bent and Andy Ballentyne both rode this midweek event in the hot and windy conditions with Brian recording 34.10 and Andy 24.11 although he was suffering from sore legs after a hard weekend's racing. Fastest by a long way was professional Jamie Burrow (Amore E Vita/PCA Ciclos Uno) with an extremely rapid 20.19 who was getting in some time trialling practise before this weekend's circuit championships. Second place was Jason White in 21.03

SPOCO 18

Wednesday 24th August 2005 - Course E38/18

Both Julia Freeman and husband (and 2nd claim member) Steve punctured in the torrential rain and windy conditions that greeted the riders in this midweek event. Andy Ballentyne chose to place safe with pressures rather than tubs and with the road flooded in places didn't regret that descision in view of the number of punctures suffered by riders during the event, although he was disappointed with his time of 52.06. The winner was Glenn Taylor (APi) in 45.43 which put him well clear of joint second placed riders Martin Meades and Neil Dowie (both Api) in 46.46, even though Glenn also suffered from a puncture near the finish.

Southend Wheelers Sporting 22

Sunday 14th August 2005 - Course E18/11

Julia Freeman did 1-3-23 for 11th overall in this Spoco counting event. Fastest overall was Jason White in an amazing 54-41 who beat next placed rider Paul Smith by 3 minutes. Fastest lady was Julia Shaw in 1-2-18. Julia confesses to being a bit disappointed with her ride as she did not feel that great.

Club Evening 10

Tuesday 9th August 2005 - Course E14/10

As happened last year, it all came down to a nailbiting climax to the evening 10 series with Andy needing to win to take the series which is decided on the best 10 places out of the 15 events. Andy's time of 24.05 was his third best of the series and quite respectable considering he had just come back from holiday, but Paul had saved the best till last and did another PB for the course in 23.53. Julia was third just one second behind Andy.

This all means that Paul retains the Twilight Trophy with 180 points and Andy was second with 172. Julia was third with 140 and first Lady.

Julia rode the De Laune 25 on the Q25/8 in Chilham in Kent, a counting event for SPOCO and managed to knock a few more seconds off her own vets record with a 1-00-15. She was fastest lady and 12th overall. Winner of the event was former Yellow Jersey holder Sean Yates in 53-14

Club Evening 10

Tuesday 26th July 2005 - Course E14/10

It was very close between the top three with Andy coming home 3 seconds ahead of Paul, who was a further 3 seconds faster than Julia. Paul's 12 year old son Jim, after his win in the National Youth Series event at Milton Keynes and then the London to Cambridge (and back) at the weekend, did a PB of 30.10 with the added incentive of new carbon forks if he can break evens.

Andy moves ahead of Paul by 2 points in the Twilight Trophy in both the overall total, but more importantly the best 10 performances which decide the trophy. Andy however misses next week and so will need to beat Paul in the final event.

Another week and another club record for Julia Freeman! Julia was 6th overall in the Southend event with a 2.6.06 to knock another two minutes off her own Vets 40-49 record set in the Maldon event this year. Fastest was Paul Smith (Shaftesbury CC) in 1.56.06.

Tuesday 12th July 2005 - Course E14/10

After the previous two events being cancelled (road works and heavy rain), conditions were very good although the light breeze was the wrong direction for the course. Andy just missed going under 24 minutes (although he was held up by a horse and cart which cost a few seconds) to beat Paul by 24 seconds. Paul was feeling tired however after his ride in Le Marmotte cyclo sportive. Julia recorded 25 dead and new members Andy Ellis and Joanna Burch Brown both improved to 26.22 and 33.45 respectively.

Shaftesbury Middlemarkers 25

Saturday 25th June 2005 - Course E2/25

Andy BAllentyne did a 57.21 for a PB (last three years) and a 4.11 improvement to win the biggest improvement prize in the Shaftesbury Middlemarkers 25 (56.30 LTS) although he had hoped to go a bit quicker and perhaps get a time that would put him in good stead for the Billroy trophy fastest 25 on age standard). He rode his track bike (92.6") but probably would have been better off on his low profile as the wind was a lot stronger at Newmarket than at home and could have used a bigger gear going out. Winner of the event was Chaz Hollosi (Gemini BC) in 54.50

Sunday 15th May 2005 - Course E1/25

Mark opened his season with a 1.03.34 in the Crest 25 for approximately 17th position and 8th on handicap. Fastest was Murat Ozdenya (PCA Ciclos Uno) in 56.07

Shaftesbury CC 10

Saturday 14th May 2005 - Course E3/10

Julia just missed the Ladies Vets 40-50 record again, this time by 2 seconds after equalling her own Mother's record last year. Her time of 24.22 put her 43 seconds clear of Sue Gray to win the Ladies events and also gave her a prize for the 3rd biggest improvment. The conditions were far from ideal however as Zak Carr's time of 20.38 showed and it is surely only a matter of time before she does get the record.

Club Evening 10

Tuesday 10th May 2005 - Course E14/10

Julia didn't let a slow puncture hinder her down on the way to winning the second event of the series on a chilly evening. Her time of 25.06 was too good for Paul and Andy who both went back on the first event. Richard got the better of Russell by four seconds and Simon, Jim and Brian all improved as well.

Julia Freeman was again fastest lady and her time of 1.1.30 on the sporting E91 course broke her own Vets 40-50 year 25 mile record by 7 seconds. Winner of the event was multi national champion Michael Hutchinson (API-Metrow Foods) in a new course and event record of 51.16.

Tuesday 26th April 2005 - Course E14/10

Paul Martin was the quickest in the first evening 10 of the year in a time of 25.03, 19 seconds quicker than Andy and a further minute ahead of Julia. Richard Jordan and Simon Macfeeters resumed their rivalry with Richard gaining his revenge from the club 25. Andy Page (PCA Ciclos Uno) was the fastest rider on the night, his time of 24:44 reflecting the stiff headwind on the first leg of each lap.

Easterley Open Hilly '25'

Sunday 3rd April 2005 - Course E1/26 - 25.2 miles

Michael Hutchinson (API - Metrow) scored an expected win in our Open Hilly 25.2 mile time trial around the undulating Thaxted Circuit. He was more than 3 minutes clear of 2nd placed rider, veteran Ray Hughes (Clarence Wheelers) who were the only two to go under the hour.

The Easterley's own Julia Freeman was the fastest Lady to win the Maud Harrison trophy in 1.8.55 with the Shaftesbury's Claire Lee in second spot with 1.11.55, although Claire had the consolation of being in the winning team along with Bruce Robinson (1.2.15) and Dave Meisner (1.14.10).

32nd Association '25'

Sunday 27th March 2005 - Course E1/25

Simon MacFeeters made his racing comeback after many years out to record 1.11.44 in the 32nd Association 25 and just get the better of Richard Jordan by 10 seconds. To quote Simon 'The two fat blokes went head to head in the 32nd association 25 on Easter Sunday with me riding my first 25 for 4 years and first competitive race for three years beating Richard by 10 seconds thus setting up a potential season long challenge. The respective times were 1:11:44 and 1:11:54, ridden on the E1 in dull cold conditions leaving plenty of room for improvement over the coming months'!
Fastest in the event was Keith Andrewartha (Shaftesbury CC) in 58.34 on a chilly morning with Paul Smith (Shaftesbury CC) second in 59.31 and Chris Negus (Shaftesbury CC) third in 1.00.58.

Hainault Hilly '50' km

Sunday 6th March 2005 - Course E14/28 - 28.8 miles

The continuing cold and icy conditions caused the start to be delayed by half an hour, which together with a nagging head wind on some stretches meant the times were significantly slower than previous years.
Andy Ballentyne gave his new road bike a try out and despite the saddle coming loose at half distance, went round in 1.24.53 which was good enough to win the Vets 40-50 prize and the Group C award.
Fastest was Tristan Davenne (Elite CC) in 1.16.10 followed by Jason White (J.D.Cycles) in 1.16.35.

Club Hilly 20
